4 Tips for Hiring a Contractor

Contractors can be your greatest asset when considering things like remodeling and room additions. If you aren't careful, however, you could wind up paying for someone who isn't even licensed! Here are just four tips to make sure you only hire the best in contractors.

1. Check Their Credentials

Not all states requires the same things from their contractors. For example, some want their contractors to pass an exam and have extension on-the-job training while others just ask them to register their names with the local brand. Make sure your contractor is actually qualified for the job before you give them a key.

2. Ask Them Questions

How long they have been in business? How many workers are within their company? How much of the remodeling project will be actually completed by them, and how much will be handed off to assistants and subcontractors? Don't worry about offering them with all of your queries. They should be open and honest with you if they expect you to be open and honest with them.

3. Talk About Money Matters

Contractors may charge you for their work in a variety of ways. For example, they could ask for a percentage up front, or they could request it all as a lump sum at the end of the project. They might charge you for the individual labor or materials or just bill you a flat flee for everything. Talk to your contractor to know what they expect.

4. Get a Guarantee

Never start a renovation without signing a contract. You'll want to specify things like schedules, budgets and project allowances within the next, and you should also include some kind of provision for damage or liability. You don't want to be blamed if there's an accident on site.

There are just four things to keep in mind when hiring a contractor. If you aren't 100 percent confident in their skills and trustworthiness, don't let them into your home. Contractors will have complete access to your family, your valuables and your property, so you need to trust them with every fiber of your being.
